Metro Vancouver cut off from rest of B.C. due to major highway closures

Mudslides and flooding caused by a storm that tore through Southern B.C. have closed all highways connecting the Lower Mainland to the rest of the province.

Several stretches of Highway 1 in the Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon have been closed Monday evening, with no estimated time of reopening.

In Abbotsford, a closure is in effect both ways between Sumas and No. 3 Road.

Further east, the roughly 200-kilometre stretch between Chilliwack and Spences Bridge has also been completely closed.

Mudslides trapped hundreds of people overnight in their cars along Lougheed Highway (Highway 7) between Hope and Agassiz. Helicopters have been evacuating stranded motorists, so far two people have been taken to hospital. That part of the highway remains closed as crews work to start clearing debris.

Highway 3 has been closed east of Hope in both directions due to a mudslide, while flooding has closed the Crownest east of Princeton.

The Coquihalla from Hope to Merritt remains closed after a mudslide Sunday afternoon. Highway 5A has been also closed due to flooding.

Highway 99 between Pemberton and Lillooet is also shut down in both directions.
