B.C. designer’s dress worn on Oscars red carpet

Dreams are now a reality for a B.C. fashion designer who watched as a dress she created was worn on the Oscars red carpet.

Delayne Dixon was blown away when she found out a dress she designed was worn by Emmy-nominated TV host and journalist Rasha Goel on Sunday.

“When I got the tag on Instagram, I was kind of in shock for a couple of minutes … I just started tearing up,” she said. “I’ve been working for so long towards these goals and when you hit that, it’s just an overwhelming feeling. The flood of support that comes afterwards is just amazing.”

The designer has a showroom in Los Angeles, where a stylist saw her creation and reached out.

“He was like, ‘I love this dress. I’d love to use it.’ So, I accepted it. I operate solely out of my house, so I just shipped the dress directly to him, to Hollywood. He’ll ship it back to me when it’s done.”

The materials were budget-friendly, Dixon says, adding up to $38.

“The fabric I found in the bargain section of Fabricland … I grabbed a bunch of it, just in case a couple orders come in for the dress. But the dress itself ratails for $350, which reflects my experience and my degree … It looked amazing in person. The fabric is a black and gold houndstooth tweed and it reflected off the lights really nice on the red carpet.”

Since Sunday’s award show, Dixon says she’s received countless messages of support and praise for her work and accomplishment.

Dixon adds the feedback she heard from Goel is she loved the dress and felt comfortable in it.

“She’s like, ‘You know what, let’s keep collaborating and keep working with you. Just let me know if you have something come up.'”
