Shots fired in Coquitlam leads to one arrest, elementary school warned

Coquitlam Mounties have arrested a person after shots were fired near Shaughnessy Street and River Drive.

According to Mounties, at around noon on Tuesday people reported hearing gunshots. Although police said there was no threat to the public, an elementary school nearby was advised to “hold and secure.”

Cpl. Paige Kuz told CityNews the person was not an active shooter, however police were maintaining caution.

“It was not an active shooter. It’s an ongoing police investigation. Police are on scene in the area right now. But there’s no threat to public safety at this time. And it’s not an active situation,” Kuz said.

By 3 p.m. École Coquitlam River Elementary was no longer under the “hold and secure” procedure and police were only canvassing the area as part of the investigation.
