A black bear that was seen capturing a gosling in Burnaby’s Central Park over the long weekend has been put down.
Video of the bear chasing two geese and two goslings was posted to reddit on Saturday. All but one gosling got away. Pitch-and-putt golfers moved aside as the bear caught the young animal.
Initially, the bear had been tranquilized, but the BC Conservation Officer Service says it had no choice but to put it down.
It adds officers considered the risk to people, as well as the bear’s chances of survival in the wild, before deciding it should be destroyed.
As of April, 23 bears in B.C. had been euthanized, according to the service.
The BC COS is reminding people to minimize the potential for encounters with bears by keeping attractants like garbage, pet food, and bird seed out of reach.
