Man with machete shot by police on Granville Street: VPD

A man who allegedly set a room on fire and attacked four people with a machete was shot by police late Saturday night in the busy Granville Entertainment District.

It happened at around 10 p.m. when a man set his suite on fire in a rooming house near Granville and Smithe Streets, VPD says.

They add the man then attacked four people in the building with a machete, leaving them all in hospital for “serious, life-altering injuries.”

When police arrived they say he was still holding the weapon. Shots were fired by police and the suspect was injured.

“The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment for serious, non-life-threatening injuries,” said a police statement.

They add there is no risk to public safety and they will release information as it comes in.

A nearby business, The Roxy Cabaret, posted on Facebook that it had closed due to the incident.

This is the second high profile police-related shooting in the downtown core in just over a week.

On July 30, police fired shots after they say a 53-year-old man attacked officers with a weapon.

Vancouver police say two officers were sitting in their cruiser in the area of East Hastings and Columbia streets around 8 a.m. when a man reportedly walked up and hit one of them with a weapon through an open window.

The VPD has said one of the officers used their taser to try to stop the man, but that “ultimately, the suspect was subdued after shots were fired.”

Witnesses who were nearby previously told CityNews they heard four gunshots.

A second officer who arrived to help was also said to have been assaulted by a bystander, though they were not seriously hurt, Const. Tania Visintin said.
