A Kootenay man has been arrested after it’s alleged he disguised himself as a doctor and broke into a hospital, Mounties say.

According to the Trail RCMP, officers were called to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital on Thursday, Oct. 6, just after 8:30 p.m.

Investigators say the suspect was trying to get into locked offices and he was found “still wearing hospital issue scrubs, coat, and hat at the scene of his alleged crimes.”

While a 39-year-old was taken into custody “without incident,” the RCMP says the suspect then tried to “break free” twice while he was being walked to the police vehicle.

Police say officers found two USB thumb drives on the suspect, adding it’s believed the items were taken from the hospital. It’s unclear what information was on these devices.

Prior to his arrest, Mounties say witnesses reported the man “went on a crime spree after causing considerable damage” in the facility. According to the police, the suspect had broken into offices and other secure locations in the hospital.

When confronted, witnesses say the man tried to convince staff that he worked at the hospital.

“When the staff did not believe his obvious ruse, he barricaded himself inside an office until the Trail RCMP arrived,” a release reads.

Trail RCMP says the suspect has since been released on several conditions as he awaits a future court date.

Investigators are recommending a number of charges, including Break and Enter with Intent to Commit an Indictable Offence, Disguise with Intent, and Identity Fraud.
