Vancouver Canucks honour fallen Burnaby RCMP officer

Prior to the team’s home opener on Saturday night, the Vancouver Canucks observed a moment of silence to honour Burnaby RCMP officer, Const. Shaelyn (Tzu-Hsin) Yang, was killed in the line of duty last week.

During the tribute, the Rogers Arena public address announcer, Al Murdoch, described Yang as a “true hero.”

“Shaeyln’s capacity to help and care for others knew no bounds. She lived her life with compassion, not judgment. A true model. She will be deeply missed,” he said.

Yang, 31, was fatally stabbed on Tuesday while assisting a Burnaby city parks employee after reports of a man in a tent at Broadview Park near Canada Way. 37-year-old Jongwon Ham has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.

The Canucks are among many tributes for Yang over the past few days. Uniformed first responders from across the region lined the streets outside Burnaby Hospital on Tuesday in her honour.

On Wednesday, former Mountie-turned-MLA, Elenore Sturko, gave an emotional speech at the B.C. Legislature in Yang’s memory.

And while in B.C. on Friday, Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Marco Mendicino, recognized the fallen Mountie’s “bravery” and “courage.”
