Museum of Anthropology at UBC to close temporarily

By Astrid Agbayani

The Museum of Anthropology (MOA) at UBC will close temporarily for much of 2023.

The public can visit collections and exhibits until Jan. 15 of next year. After which, the museum will close its doors for seismic upgrades and building improvements.

According to MOA, improvements to the space will include new lighting, carpets, skylights, fire detection, and landscaping.

The change will not affect the original appearance of its Great Hall and will preserve its original architectural design.

Despite the closure, those from Indigenous communities will still be able to access the collections.

On-site behind the scenes tours, virtual events, and digital school programs will still be offered throughout the renovations.

Visitors still have time to see the current exhibition that showcases contemporary works of artists with Mexican American heritage.

Permanent collections and exhibitions are also open until Jan. 15th, with the museum offering a discounted $10 admission on the closing weekend.
