Tofino Bus and Vancouver Island Connector suspends operations until May

Two bus routes connecting Victoria, Nanaimo, and Tofino are being suspended Wednesday, Jan. 4.

The Tofino Bus and Vancouver Island Connector will resume their services in May. According to Wilson’s Transportation, the private company that manages the bus lines, it was “not a decision made lightly.”

The company stated they know many people rely on their services.

However, the company says they had a 95 per cent decline in ridership since the COVID-19 pandemic. The company adds that they tried their best the past few months, making cuts to service levels, and availing government grants and subsidies.

With the current passenger count, the company says it’s operating at a loss and had no choice but to make the changes amidst rising costs and labour shortages.

The company says services will transition to more seasonal services from May to October.
