One person dead in Nanaimo mall stabbing: RCMP

One person is dead after a stabbing at a Nanaimo mall on Sunday, according to police.

The Nanaimo RCMP says around 7 p.m., first responders received reports of someone who walked into Port Place Shopping Centre with a stab wound. Investigators say the incident happened in the parking lot of the mall near a London Drugs.

The man was taken to the hospital where he later died. Shortly after, police say a man was arrested in connection with the stabbing.

An area around the mall was blocked off for a time on Sunday.

Const. Gary O’Brien says it’s too early to tell if the victim and suspect knew each other.

“Police can … say though with confidence, that they are not looking for any other suspects and there is no further risk to the public,” he said.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have dash cam video from the area to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file #2023-2530.
