B.C. dangerous avalanche warning in place for long weekend

You may be out enjoying fresh powder for Family Day weekend, but avalanche warnings throughout B.C. should remind you to exercise caution up in the mountains.

Avalanche Canada warns that there’s considerable danger for the North Shore mountains and the Coastal mountain range.

In the Lower Mainland, experts say the recent storm snow has fallen on hard melt crust which will take time to bond. Avalanche Canada says it’s best to keep away from steep slopes until the snow has had time to stabilize. It also warns that natural avalanches could be possible while human-triggered avalanches are likely to happen.

The public safety organization says people should make sure to match their plans to weather conditions.

Nine people have been killed by avalanches in B.C. so far this season.
