Fire crews in Vancouver say a man’s body was found at the scene of a fire on the Downtown Eastside Saturday night.
Asst. Chief Keith Stewart with the Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS) says officers were called to a building near Dunlevy Avenue and East Hastings Street around 9:20 p.m.
“There was a bystander on-scene waving the crews down, alerting them to the back parking lot where there was a metal door and there was smoke coming out of that door,” he said.
Stewart says while crews were working at putting the fire out officers realized “there was a patient inside.”
“They brought him out, they were doing CPR on the patient immediately. BC Ambulance arrived shortly after and they declared the patient deceased on scene,” he said.
Stewart says the fire is not being considered suspicious at this time, but the cause is still under investigation.
Around 42 firefighters responded to the blaze, which was put out fairly quickly, according to VFRS.
