B.C. dealing with over 60 wildfires heading into the weekend

Although the Lower Mainland is expected to be cold and rainy over the weekend, much of the Southeast portion of B.C. is dealing with wildfires.

Several of these fires are currently burning around Kamloops and the Cariboo region, but Prince George is getting the worst of it with 43 active fires.

Data from the BC Wildfire Service shows the province has seen 167 fires this year, with 63 active and 15 having started in the past 24 hours as of 6 p.m. Friday.

Among the active fires, 50 have been caused by humans, seven have been caused by lightning, and six have unknown causes.

The BC Wildfire Service also reports 10 fires are currently out of control.

Wildfire crews will be especially busy this weekend, as the service also says it will also be assisting with flood response in Cache Creek.

“The #BCWildfire Service is prepared to support flood response across the province this weekend. 20 personnel have deployed to the #CacheCreekBC area, 33 personnel are stationed in the #GrandForksBC region, and an additional 20 personnel are on standby to assist if needed,” it said in a tweet.
