Restrictions in place near West Kelowna for McDougall Creek wildfire suppression

The BC Wildfire Service is implementing an area restrictions order around the McDougall Creek wildfire to take effect Saturday at midnight.

The restrictions are being put in place to protect the public and BC Wildfire Service personnel while fire suppression activities take place in the area adjacent to West Kelowna.

The restricted area runs beside the west side of Okanagan Lake from Mt. Drought to Sugarloaf Mountain, west towards Chapperon Lake, and south until Highway 97C where the zone is cut off.

The order will remain in place until Sept. 8, or until it’s rescinded.

The only exceptions to this order are for people travelling to or from their residence or property that isn’t under evacuation order, using a highway, or engaging in agricultural activities or livestock management on Crown or private property.

The McDougall Creek fire remains out of control, according to BC Wildfire Services. As of Friday evening, it was estimated at 12,318 hectares and is one of three fires that make up the Grouse Complex fires. There are currently 92 firefighters, 16 helicopters, and 97 structure protection personnel allocated to fighting this fire.

Nearly 200 structures between West Kelowna, the Westbank First Nation, and other parts of the regional district had been lost to the fire, according to a statement by West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund on Tuesday.
