Highway 1 remains closed between Boston Bar and Lytton due to wildfire

The provincial government says B.C.’s Highway 1 remains closed between Boston Bar and Lytton due to an out-of-control wildfire.

The section of Highway 1 closed when the Kookipi Creek fire grew to over four times its size and threatened its surrounding area on Aug. 17.

The BC Wildfire Service says the fire — discovered on July 8 — is burning at approximately 16,961 hectares in size as of Monday night and is believed to have been caused by lightning or other natural causes.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says BC Hydro power lines and poles have since been damaged by the blaze, and crews are working on their restoration.

Those who need to make their way between the Lower Mainland and the Interior have other options with Highway 1 closed, as B.C.’s Highways 3, 5, and 99 remain open for travel.
