Maple Ridge moving towards a rapid bus transit system

Councillors in Maple Ridge have passed a resolution in support of securing a rapid transit system that can better connect the city to the Lower Mainland.

This system is Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), one that will enable “residents to have access to faster and more frequent buses.”

According to the City of Maple Ridge, this was initially proposed as part of TransLink’s 10-year plan for the area.

Mayor Dan Ruimy says this is just one part of Maple Ridge’s transit expansion.

“The City of Maple Ridge is ready and willing to welcome Bus Rapid Transit and wants to be among the first to secure this service for our rapidly growing community at the heart of the Lower
Mainland,” he said. “Connecting Maple Ridge to Langley Township, Langley City and the new SkyTrain line makes a lot of sense.”

“BRT enables residents to have access to faster and more frequent buses – better connecting the city centre to the Lower Mainland. Today’s Council resolution is a strong signal to the Mayors’ Council, our government partners, and our community that we are committed, willing to partner, and the direction we are headed.”

As part of this resolution being pushed forward, councillors recommend the city secure funding from both the provincial and federal levels, prioritize investment into two new BRT lines, and focus on a route between Langley and Maple Ridge’s Haney Place.

Council also asks city staff to work alongside TransLink and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to map out steps Maple Ridge can take to complete the project.
