One dead after vessel capsizes near Wreck Beach Monday

One person has died after a vessel capsized near Wreck Beach in Vancouver Monday afternoon, according to Vancouver Fire Rescue Services.

Assistant Fire Chief Keith Stewart says an unidentified male was brought to shore by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and pronounced dead at the scene after paramedics attempted to resuscitate him.

Lieutenant Michelle Scott with Maritime Forces Pacific says Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Victoria received a call about a sinking vessel at approximately 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Two Canadian Coast Guard vessels and a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter were deployed to conduct a search, according to Scott.

BC Emergency Health Services says it received a call at 2:41 p.m. and responded with two ambulances and a supervisor.

The CCG dive team was able to locate and clear the vessel from on board the CCG hovercraft Siyay.

The search ended at 6:20 p.m., Scott says, as it’s believed only one person was aboard the vessel when it sunk.

RCMP were on scene and are now conducting an investigation.
