Sewage truck flips on Mountain Highway, causes North Shore delays

Fire crews and police were busy in North Vancouver on Friday after a sewage truck flipped and started spilling its contents.

A hazmat team was on scene and the northbound lanes of Mountain Highway were shut down just south of the Highway 1 overpass for much of the afternoon.

North Vancouver Assistant Fire Chief Chris Byrom says crews aren’t sure how the truck rolled over, but feels it was obviously an accident.

“I’m not sure how it got in the position it was … whether the brakes or whether it was going too fast, we’re not actually sure how it happened,” he said.

Byrom says the truck luckily missed all of the oncoming traffic on the other side of the road when it went down.

“It could have been really, really bad considering how big the truck was and the velocity and speed that it was traveling,” he said.

Byrom adds that no one was injuired and none of the sewage or diesel went down any drains as crews were able to contain them in time.
