Police shoot, kill man near Abbotsford hospital: IIO

B.C.’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), says a man was shot dead by police in Abbotsford on Thursday.

The Abbotsford Police Department says officers responded to a 911 call at Abbotsford Regional Hospital at 3:48 p.m. after receiving reports of a man in the area with a weapon “threatening harm to medical staff.”

Abbotsford police say officers found the man near Robertson and Ware streets and he was shot by police officers after an “interaction.”

The man was treated at the scene but succumbed to his injuries.

The IIO says it was called in to investigate the shooting after it happened.

“Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the incident and whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and justified under the circumstances,” it said in a release.

Police say no officers, hospital staff, or patients were hurt.

The IIO asks anyone with any information or video footage of the incident to contact its witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
