Mounties seek video after ‘brazen’ shooting near Coquitlam Centre

Mounties in Coquitlam say it’s “extremely lucky” no one was hurt after what they are describing as a “brazen” shooting Thursday afternoon.

Police say they “received multiple reports that multiple individuals had shot at a vehicle and were pointing a firearm” just before 3 p.m.

The RCMP was asking the public to avoid the area of Johnson Street and Glen Drive for several hours due to the incident.

Officers found bullet holes and casings in the area and say they found two suspects they believe were involved in the shooting.

No injuries have been reported.

“We are extremely lucky that no one was injured during this brazen day-time shooting in a very populated area,” said Supt. Keith Bramhill, Officer in Charge of Coquitlam RCMP. “As we are in the initial stages of the investigation, we are asking anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or saw a man pointing a firearm in the area of Johnson Street and Glen Drive to contact police.”

Corp. Alexa Hodgins says the location of this incident is particularly concerning.

“If this was a normal Thursday, not during winter break, school would have been just coming out of session,” she told CityNews. “There are several schools nearby, the area’s heavily populated with residents as well as commercial and the mall nearby. So we’re very fortunate that this happened at a time when school was not in session.”

Hodgins did not provide any details about the suspects or what type of firearm was used.

Posts on social media Thursday afternoon showed several police cruisers in the area, and CityNews received a number of calls about the incident.

“All of Glen Drive near Gleneagle Secondary School is blocked off,” said a caller named Cameron. “There’s a large police presence, large guns.”

“They got the road blocked off at Johnson and they got some officers down around High Street or just before High Street to on Glen,” said a caller named Larry. “They were running around all over with weapons drawn.”

Police ask anyone with any information or who may have dash-cam, cellphone or home surveillance video from the area between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. to call 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2024-324.
