The block of Roper Avenue between Lee and Parker streets is sealed off by RCMP officers Thursday, as investigators focus their efforts around a vehicle.

“The suspect vehicle fled the scene and a vehicle fire was reported in Surrey shortly after, however, the investigation to determine whether the two events are linked is ongoing,” Const. Chantal Sears said in a statement.

A vehicle of interest near the shooting site, which appears to be a black BMW X5, can be seen behind police investigation cones, with its hood nestled between large trees up against a wooden fence in front of a home. Evidence markers can be seen all over the pavement.

“This incident appears to be targeted and there is no ongoing risk to public safety in the area at this time,” said Sears. “The investigation is in the early stages and our General Investigations Unit has been engaged.”

Footage supplied to CityNews from a neighbourhood CCTV camera in the area of Roper Avenue and Lee Street includes clear audio of dozens of gunshots ringing out.

James, who lives around the corner from the crime scene, tells CityNews he was woken up after midnight by what he explains was “obvious gunfire.”

“[It was] really, really loud. Not a bunch of fireworks going off, [but] really, really loud barrage of automatic weapons going off, then a bit of a space and then that ‘pop, pop, pop, pop.'”

James says he then saw a man in dark clothing run past his driveway.

Mounties are urging anyone with information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact the White Rock RCMP at 778-545-4800.
