Daylight Saving Time: B.C. to spring forward Sunday

If you enjoy sleeping in, the upcoming time change is likely not your favourite.

On Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m., British Columbians will move their clocks forward an hour to “spring” into Daylight Saving Time.

Most provinces, as well as the territories of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, will move their clocks ahead one hour.

Yukon and most of Saskatchewan keep their clocks the same year-round. Yukon made the switch for the last time in March 2020, and standard time is now permanent there.

While many complain this time of year about “losing” an hour of sleep, the beginning of DST means the start of longer hours of daylight for the coming several months.

However, many in B.C. may be wondering how long they’ll have to continue with time changes twice a year. Legislation was passed four years ago to allow the province to permanently stay on daylight time. However, then-premier John Horgan said the move would depend on whether Washington, Oregon, and California did the same.

B.C. Premier David Eby said last year the province wants to remain “in sync” with west coast American states but added he’s “very much looking forward to getting rid of daylight saving time.”

The Ontario legislature, meanwhile, also passed a bill in November 2020 to put an end to time changes and to keep the province permanently on DST. The bill received royal assent but has yet to be proclaimed into law because it was contingent on New York and Québec making the same change, which has yet to happen.
