Massey Tunnel counterflow system upgrades set to begin

Commuters who take the George Massey Tunnel are being told to take note of changes to the rush-hour counterflow system starting next week.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says it is upgrading the electronic lane-control system, which will be offline for four weeks starting Monday, March 11.

The system will be replaced with manual counterflow operations during that time.

The ministry says during peak times, crews will manually install the counterflow using vehicles, personnel, and devices, like cones and barriers.

The manual counterflow operations will be in place weekdays from about 5:45 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., and 3 p.m. untl 6:30 p.m.

In addition to the temporary switch to a manual counterflow system, the ministry says the Massey Tunnel will be shut overnight between April 4 and April 8.
