10,000 people lost power across Lower Mainland Saturday, says BC Hydro

Almost 10,000 people lost power temporarily across the Lower Mainland Saturday evening, BC Hydro says.

More than 2,000 Vancouver customers had to deal with outages starting just after 6 p.m. due to “equipment failure,” the utility says.

Thousands more across Anmore, Belcarra, Burnaby, Langley, North Vancouver, and Port Moody lost power around 5:30 p.m., with most outages the result of downed trees.

“The vast majority [of outages] are really from the winds that came through earlier,” BC Hydro spokesperson Mora Scott told CityNews.

“So we have a number of trees down on our wires.”

Power was restored to most customers by around 9 p.m., with just over 2,000 remaining in the dark as of 9:30 p.m.
