Library on wheels rolling through Surrey

Readers in Surrey will be pleased to hear that a new kind of library is coming directly to you.

Surrey Libraries announced Friday the launch of its new ‘Mobile Library’ service — a small upfitted van that travels around Surrey, bringing the library to underserved areas.

The van is equipped with over 1,000 books, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and it has laptops that patrons can use. Surrey Libraries says their knowledgeable staff will travel with it to help readers find what they need.

Surrey’s Chief Librarian, Surinder Bhogal, says the mobile library is chance to reach hopeful library-goers where they normally can’t.

“Surrey is geographically vast, and we know not everyone in Surrey can easily access a library branch, so the Mobile Library brings literacy and opportunities for learning to them,” said Bhogal.

Surrey Libraries says the van will be travelling around town from Tuesday through Saturday next week and will visit many locations like recreation centres, food banks, seniors’ centres, care homes, parks, and more.

“I’m thrilled to see the launch of Surrey Libraries’ Mobile Library, bringing the joy of reading to every corner of our city,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “This innovative service is a testament to our community’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.”

A celebration for the mobile library launch is planned for Monday, June 3 at 3 p.m. The event will have refreshments, crafts, contests, and a meet and greet with the library mascot, Walter.
