Woman dead after apartment fire in Kelowna

A 42-year-old woman is dead after a fire in a Kelowna apartment Friday evening, police say.

Emergency crews were called out to the fire in a building on Bernard Avenue near Richter Street around 5:30 p.m.

The building remains cordoned off and multiple people were displaced by the blaze, the RCMP says.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of the victim and will be providing any necessary support services,” said Corp. Michael Gauthier of the Kelowna/Central Okanagan RCMP. “Thank you to the Kelowna Fire Department, Salvation Army and City of Kelowna who assisted in accommodating the individuals displaced by the fire.”

Mounties say Kelowna’s General Investigative Support Team has taken over the file to investigate.
