BC Conservative Leader John Rustad is asking the NDP to recall the legislature so MLAs can discuss threats south of the border to put a 25 per cent tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States.
President-Elect Donald Trump has made that threat to both Canada and Mexico, saying it’s in response to the “long-simmering problem of illegal immigration and drug trafficking” into the U.S. across our borders.
Premier David Eby says the problems are real, but the tariffs are unjustified and would hurt American jobs as well as Canadian ones.
He took part in a meeting Wednesday with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as the other premiers, to go over their concerns.
Meanwhile, Rustad says the legislature needs to be recalled immediately so B.C. can look at a provincial response, including emergency funding to secure borders and ports.
He says we’re dealing with a trade emergency and this can’t wait until after Christmas.
The legislature’s next session is expected to begin in mid-February with a budget presentation set for March 4.
