Surrey Walmart location evacuated, closed after fire in clothing section

A fire broke out in a Walmart in Surrey’s Central City shopping centre Wednesday afternoon.

Surrey Fire Service Assistant Chief Greg McRobbie tells 1130 NewsRadio that crews were called to the scene around 1:40 p.m. By the time firefighters arrived, he says, the store’s sprinkler system had mostly extinguished a fire contained to a clothing rack on the second floor.

McRobbie says an investigation into the fire’s cause is underway. He could not disclose whether the cause was suspicious in nature.

The Surrey Police Service tells 1130 NewsRadio it is prepared to work with fire investigators if needed.

The store remains closed, awaiting clearance from officials to reopen.
