Weekend shooting in Burnaby sends 71-year-old to hospital

The Burnaby RCMP is investigating a late-night shooting over the weekend that seriously injured a 71-year-old man who police say was living in the woods. Cecilia Hua reports.

The Burnaby RCMP says it is investigating a shooting that happened over the weekend in a wooded area near Highway 1 and Willingdon Avenue.

Mounties say officers were called to the area around 10:15 p.m. on Saturday, after the victim, “who appears to have been living in the area, was located and taken to the hospital where he is continuing to undergo treatment.” CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO 1130 NEWSRADIO VANCOUVER LIVE!

Police say that while the 71-year-old victim’s injuries are serious, he is in stable condition.

“The motive is still under investigation but at this time it is believed to be an isolated incident,” police said. “Burnaby RCMP’s Investigative Support Team (IST) is leading the investigation.”

The Burnaby RCMP is now urging anyone with information about the incident to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.

In an update Monday afternoon, Mounties say the shooting was likely “targeted” and there’s no further risk to the community.
