A Burnaby man has been found guilty of manslaughter in the 2023 stabbing of a teenager on a Surrey bus.
On April 11, 2023, the Surrey RCMP responded to a report of a teenager suffering from life-threatening injuries after a stabbing near Old Yale Road and King George Road.
“Sadly, the 17-year-old victim died as a result of his injuries shortly after being transported to hospital,” said police.
Then-20-year old Kaiden Mintenko was arrested five days later and originally charged with second-degree murder in relation to the stabbing.
Mintenko was accused of stabbing the 17-year old victim with a knife after an altercation broke out on a bus.
The case ignited concerns over violence on the transit system because it came a few days after several other violent incidents.
In an update Thursday, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says Mintenko was convicted of manslaughter.
“This conviction was made possible by a number of witnesses who cooperated with the police and testified in court,” said Sgt. Freda Fong.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 10.
