Applications open for new medical school at SFU’s Surrey campus

B.C. Premier David Eby announced Tuesday a major milestone for a new medical school coming to Surrey.

The Simon Fraser University (SFU) School of Medicine, which will be the first of its kind to open in Western Canada in over 50 years, is now accepting applications.

In August, the university announced it was anticipating receiving accreditation in late September.

“Once preliminary accreditation status is received, we will be allowed to launch the first admissions cycle,” SFU said, adding that it planned to begin interviewing prospective students in the spring of 2026.

At a media event Tuesday, Eby addressed hopeful applicants, “You would start school in August of next year.”

He explained that while the first cohorts will attend an interim space, a new, permanent home for the medical school is under development and expected to be completed in 2030.

“We are building a hub of innovation in health that will lead to high-quality health care for all residents south of the Fraser and for residents right across British Columbia.”

Minister of Postsecondary Education and Future Skills Jessie Sunner says the new school will add 48 new students to the region.

“This number will continue to grow year after year, and these students will become the family doctors and specialists that our communities need,” Sunner explained.

She says the community has watched too long as students leave Surrey to study medicine.

“This city now is leading the way in health care by ensuring that we are training them here so they can stay here and serve the community right here.”
