Burnaby fuel refinery water leak contained

A water leak at the Burnaby fuel refinery was contained on Monday afternoon.
Earlier that day, Sunoco LP says that the refinery was responding to a “small on-site leak of process water” from one of its tank farms, resulting in possible odour for people living nearby.

In an update, the company announced that public access to Confederation Park has been restored.
Sunoco says its team began its response procedure to the leak, while Burnaby’s fire department had also responded to monitor the situation.
“Since the process water involved contained hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), Burnaby Fire deployed air monitoring equipment along Penzance Drive and advised the public to avoid the area of Confederation Park adjacent to Penzance Drive while monitoring continued,” said Chris Cho, spokesperson at Sunoco in the update.
Now, crews are “demobilizing.”
The refinery produces about 30 per cent of all transportation fuel used in B.C.
The former Parkland refinery, before Sunoco LP took over the operation last year, had previously released a noxious odour during another leak in January 2024 caused by unusually cold weather disrupting operations.
