A deadly fire that tore through mulitple homes in Coquitlam’s Maillardville neighbourhood Tuesday has proven to be fatal.

The RCMP says one person has been confirmed deceased.

“Based on information provided by a witness, it was determined one resident was unaccounted for,” police said.

“During firefighting operations,Coquitlam Fire/Rescue Services located a deceased individual inside the residence.”

Two other people were injured in the blaze.

“An 18-year-old was treated at scene and a Coquitlam RCMP officer was transported to a local area hospital for smoke inhalation,” Mounties said.

Fire crews say they responded to multiple 911 calls shortly after 9 a.m. after reports of heavy black smoke coming from the area of Roderick Avenue near Hart Street.

“Crews arrived to find three homes involved in fire, including a duplex, with heavy fire and smoke visible from multiple areas both inside and outside the structures,” Michelle Frilund, director of communications for the City of Coquitlam, told CityNews.

“Firefighters acted quickly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring homes.”

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

It isn’t clear how many residents have been displaced, but the city says they are being connected with partner agencies to provide them with the necessary supports.
