Witnesses sought after another senior distraction theft: VPD

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says it is looking for witnesses after a senior-targeted distraction theft Tuesday afternoon.

The VPD says a 76-year-old woman was waiting for family members near East 11th Avenue and Victoria Drive around 12:30 p.m. when she was approached by a woman who said she looked like her mother.

Police say the unknown woman hugged the senior and said it was her mother’s birthday. While hugging the senior, the woman removed her gold necklace and replaced it with another one.

About half an hour later, the senior realized her necklace, which had two gold rings on it, was gone, the VPD says.

The woman is described as being in her mid-30s with a round face and short dark hair.

Police say a dark green four-door sedan is related to this incident and was driven by a man in his mid-30s with short dark hair and no facial hair.

“Police are urging community members with elderly relatives to make sure their loved ones are aware these thefts are occurring, and to take steps to protect themselves,” said Const. Megan Lui.

“Keep valuable jewelry hidden under clothing and do not let strangers approach you, even if they seem friendly and are offering gifts.”

Anyone with information or video footage from the area between 12:15 p.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday is asked to call the VPD.
