Former B.C. Liberal MLA Mike Bernier announced as new leader of CentreBC

CentreBC announced Saturday that former B.C. Liberal MLA Mike Bernier will be the leader of the relatively new political party, CentreBC.

This comes after founding leader Karin Kirkpatrick stepped down from the role in June.

“I am stepping up to this role because, like so many British Columbians, the two parties on offer do not represent my values. I am excited to play a part in building a safer, more affordable, and more prosperous B.C.,” says Bernier.

Bernier is the former Minister of Education and MLA for Peace River South.

“BC needs a socially progressive, fiscally responsible choice,” said Bernier. “A government that will promote economic growth while protecting our beautiful province for future generations.”

“CentreBC is focused on the things that bring together so many British Columbians, that can bring together a broad coalition of builders and doers, rather than excluding anyone who does not pass a purity test. That is what will help create a new path forward for B.C., one that is best for all British Columbians. This is what we are building with CentreBC.”

CentreBC is now working on building a foundation to compete in the next provincial election.

Bernier comes to the position with a plethora of experience behind his appointment.

He was elected as an MLA in 2013, 2017 and again in 2020. He served as Minister of Education and Parliamentary Secretary for Energy Literacy and the Environment.

When in opposition, he served as the critic for housing and for finance.

He was the mayor of Dawson Creek from 2008 to 2013, previously serving as a city councillor from 2005 to 2008.

Bernier has been employed in the oil and gas industry for over 20 years.
