Elderly driver dies after crash in Coquitlam

An elderly driver has died after a single-vehicle crash in Coquitlam, the RCMP says.

Mounties say they were called to Banting Street and Como Lake Avenue after a report from BC Emergency Health Services around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“The elderly driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was taken to hospital, where they later succumbed to their injuries,” police said.

“The Coquitlam RCMP give their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”

Photos taken at the scene show an SUV with a badly damaged front end. Debris can be seen scattered across the roadway, and a wheel is visible several feet away from the SUV.

In the pictures, the vehicle appears to have jumped the curb and hit a bus stop pole. A nearby hydro pole also appears to have been damaged.

Police say no other injuries were reported and the incident is not believed to be criminal in nature.
