Wildfire fight continues across B.C.

Three weeks after flames forced them from their homes, residents of Boston Bar have been given the green light to return. This comes after the Fraser Valley Regional District downgraded several evacuation orders Wednesday; however, residents do remain on alert to leave again at a moment’s notice.
That’s not the case further north, where 1,500 people remain under evacuation orders due to the Pear Lake Fire. This remains the largest wildfire in the province, having burned nearly 1,300 square kilometres.
A pilot was also taken to hospital after being forced to make a water landing near 70 Mile House while assisting in the fight.
As of Wednesday, authorities estimate the blaze has destroyed 120 properties outside Clinton.
It’s a similar situation near the Okanagan Indian Band reserve west of Vernon. Flames from the Bradley Creek wildfire tore through over 200 properties over the weekend, including the family home of Amber Cardenas.
“It was a beautiful home,” Cardenas said.
“It wasn’t perfect, but it was full of love and many family gatherings and dinners.”
Cardenas and her family had just minutes to evacuate from the property she had called home for the past 12 years, leaving much of their lives in the rearview mirror.
“It’s a big loss,” she said.
“Family mementos, things from my grandma, both my grandmothers’ things are gone.”
Like many evacuees, Cardenas anxiously awaited news regarding their home and only learned the fate of the property through family and friends.
“Thank you to family members who are starting fundraisers for those who’ve lost their home,” she said.
“It’s going to be a long road. It’s going to be a long journey, and I just wish the most success for everyone.”
To help rebuild their lives, the family has set up a GoFundMe to help them navigate the next few weeks. As of Wednesday night, it had raised more than $14,000.
