The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is seeking witnesses to an arrest that took place aboard a SkyTrain in New Westminster on July 31.
According to the IIO, a man was taken into custody by Metro Vancouver Transit Police (MVTP) after officers responded to reports of a disturbance on an eastbound SkyTrain shortly after midnight.
Police said they received a complaint that the man was allegedly harassing other passengers and was believed to be carrying a weapon.
MVTP officers met the train, removed the man, and arrested him. He was then transported to the New Westminster Police Department’s (NWPD) holding cells.
Records from the NWPD indicate that at approximately 1:30 a.m., BC Emergency Health Services was called to assess the man. He was subsequently transported to hospital for assessment and treatment.
The incident was reported to the IIO, which has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
The IIO is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant information to contact the agency as the investigation continues.
