Police investigating two distraction thefts in Vancouver

Vancouver police are investigating two distraction-style thefts targeting seniors and are working to determine whether the incidents are connected.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says the first theft occurred on Aug. 28 at approximately 2:30 p.m. at a bus stop near Macdonald Street and West 10th Avenue.
According to investigators, a 63-year-old woman was approached by a man and a woman travelling in a white vehicle. Police say the female suspect got out of the car, offering to pray for the woman before returning to the vehicle and leaving the area.
After the suspects drove away, the victim discovered that a necklace, described as a family heirloom, had been stolen during the interaction.
The second incident happened on Aug. 31 at around noon near Butler Street and East 49th Avenue.
Police say an 88-year-old man was outside his home when a woman in a vehicle called him over. The suspect allegedly showed the man a ring and persuaded him to accept a piece of jewelry.
After the suspects left, the victim realized that his own ring, which had belonged to his late wife, was missing and had been replaced with a fake ring.
Investigators are working to determine whether the two incidents are linked.
The VPD is reminding residents to be cautious when approached by strangers who attempt to engage them in close-contact interactions, particularly when valuable jewellery is involved.
