12-year-old boy injured by exploding firework in Port Moody

The Port Moody Police Department says a young boy was sent to hospital after being hit in the face by an exploding firework.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Friday, police say they received a report of a group of youths setting off fireworks near the Port Moody Recreation Complex, located on Ioco Road near Knowle Street.

“Attending officers were surprised when they located a 12-year-old boy who had just been hit in the face by a firework set off by one of his friends,” PMPD said.

“The boy’s friends fled from officers but were located a short distance away.”

The child was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police say. The incident appears to have been accidental, they say, but officers have issued a $500 bylaw ticket to the youth responsible for setting off the firework.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers of fireworks being set off by those who have no business doing so,” said Sgt. Sam Zacharias.

“Our city’s bylaws are clear: fireworks are prohibited year-round and can only be set off if a permit has been obtained through Port Moody Fire Rescue.”

Anyone caught violating this bylaw may be subject to seizure and a violation ticket, Zacharias says.

PMPD says it usually sees an increase in fireworks-related calls in October.

Each municipality across Metro Vancouver has its own fireworks-related bylaws. Many require permits for the sale and use of fireworks. Residents should check with their local fire departments before purchasing or using fireworks.
