Burnaby police seek help identifying package thief, warn residents about ‘porch piracy’

The Burnaby RCMP is turning to the public for help identifying a suspect in a recent package theft.

Police say the incident took place Sept. 28 at a home in South Burnaby. They have released photos of the suspect and suspect vehicle.

“We’re hoping that the distinct vehicle, coupled with the suspect’s clothing, will help someone identify this individual,” Cpl. Mike Kalanj said.

“Anyone that falls victim to porch piracy is reminded to always report it to police.”

The holiday season is just around the corner, and with that comes an increase in online shopping, with more packages being left on doorsteps.

“While we have not yet seen an increase in reported porch piracy, we are approaching that time of year,” said Kalanj.

“These thieves often strike in broad daylight, looking for loot and plundering unattended packages in residential neighbourhoods.”

Police recommend using tracking notifications to know exactly when packages arrive and then bringing them inside as soon as possible. It is also possible to request secure delivery, requiring a signature upon delivery, or have packages delivered to a secure alternate pick-up location.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and refer to file 2026-34807.
