Nice weather means local golf courses busier than usual in January

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – It was a busy weekend for some golf courses in the Lower Mainland.

Surrey’s Guildford Golf & Country Club has seen a spike in visits the last few days. But pro shop manager Samantha Kirk admits it doesn’t exactly undo the 90 mm of rain they had last week.

“Our course is a little bit wet. But in the last few days, especially over the weekend, we have seen an increase in business. That nice weather does send a calling out to the golfers,” she said.

Kirk notes January and February are completely weather-dependent, but she hopes the rain continues to give them a break. The club is hoping to surpass its target for the month.

“We’re very excited for hopefully some really good weather in the summer, kind of putting ourselves back in the golf map.”

Kirk is also a golf instructor and is a bit worried about the future of the sport.

“Golf itself, it’s on a little bit of a decline still. We’re seeing a lot of golf courses start to sell their land since their land is so valuable right now. We need to work together and keep the game going.”
