Centennial Beach parking lot overflows for second time this summer, causing road closure

DELTA (NEWS 1130) – It’s not often police will stop you from driving to the beach, but that’s happened twice in Delta so far this summer.
So many people decided to head down to Centennial Beach and Boundary Bay Regional Park on Sunday, Delta Police had to shut down the access road. Boundary Bay Road was blocked off at 12th Avenue because of an “overwhelming number of vehicles,” according to Delta Police, for several hours, and the parking lot overflowed.
Delta City Councillor Dylan Kruger says something needs to be done.
“It’s a victim of its own success. This is the second time this summer that we’ve had to have closures,” he says. “Unfortunately, it’s a one road access right now to and from the beach.”
He believes a short-term fix could be made to encourage visitors not to drive.
“You know, more advertisements on ways to get to the beach through some of the beautiful trails along the Boundary Bay Dike. It’s very accessible by bus and by bike, so lots of great ways to get to the beach. But on a beautiful summer day, let’s try and get out of the car as well.”
Kruger says the City of Delta has written a letter to Metro Vancouver, which operates the beach, but no action has been taken yet.
The road has since been re-opened.
