Temporary protection order for Waldorf Hotel

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver city council has made sure the Waldorf Hotel won’t be torn down for at least the next four months.
Council has placed a 120 day protection order on the Waldorf, while the city evaluates its heritage value.
A heritage designation would give the city more say in the building’s future.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says it’s a step to ensure a thriving arts & culture community and economy. “As we’ve done over the past four years, we need to take every step we can as a council to ensure we have a thriving arts and culture community and economy, and I think this is an immediate tool we can use in the mix.”
Meantime, a few dozen Waldorf supporters gathered outside city hall over the noon hour
Dan Kurc uses it for his art and says for him, it’s more about the people than the building. “It would be great to see it stay but I think the focus should be on the people that made it happen.”
Artist Kevin House says he’ll leave Vancouver if the Waldorf is not around. “Berlin or New York, or somewhere that’s more copacetic to people who create. For me, I’ll leave town, for sure.”
The City will report back to council by mid-May.
