UBC confirms February return to in-person classes

The University of British Columbia has announced in-person instruction will resume for the “majority” of classes on Feb. 7 after a delay due to COVID-19 concerns.
Like a number of other post-secondary institutions, the university delayed the return to campus after the holiday break in light of rising case counts and hospitalizations in B.C. and beyond.
“This decision was made collaboratively, in consultation with Deans, Academic Heads and Directors, and student leadership, considering the learning needs of students and the health and safety of the university community,” a statement reads.
“We recognize that some members of our community may be apprehensive about returning to campus, and the university has put in place multiple layers of protection to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in response to information on the progression of the pandemic.”

Masks will be required in all indoor spaces, with medical-grade masks recommended. Free, rapid test kits will be available on campus, given to those with valid university ID.
The announcement comes the same week students at Simon Fraser Univerity staged a walkout to protest that school’s return to in-person learning.
