Ibrahim Ali trial sees another delay

There has been another delay in the roughly 8-month-long trial of the man accused of killing a Burnaby girl six years ago.
On Wednesday, the judge was supposed to begin giving instructions to the jury, but this step has been pushed back by a day.
The victim, a 13-year-old girl who can’t be named because of a publication ban, was found dead in Burnaby’s Central Park in July 2017, hours after her mother reported her missing.
In September 2018, Ibrahim Ali, who was 28-years-old at the time, was charged with first-degree murder.
After years of delays, Ibrahim pled not guilty when his first-degree murder trial began in April. The reason for this latest delay can’t be shared because of a different publication ban.
During the trial, the jury heard from dozens of Crown witnesses including experts who said the girl was strangled, and Ali’s DNA was found inside her body.
Ali’s lawyer has argued the Crown has only proven that Ali and the victim had sex, and not that he killed her.
The judge is now expected to begin giving his instructions to the jury on Thursday. After that, the jury will begin deliberating the evidence and deciding their verdict.
