Man charged in connection to Granville Street triple stabbing

The Vancouver Police Department says a man has been charged in connection to a triple stabbing in downtown Vancouver last week.

Between 9:40 p.m. and 9:52 p.m. on July 22, three men — a 33-year-old, a 41-year-old, and a 32-year-old — were allegedly stabbed on Granville Street between Davie and Nelson streets.

The 29-year-old accused was arrested by police just moments after the incident.

In an update Wednesday, police say he has now been charged with one count of aggravated assault.

Vancouver mayor says conditions of attack ‘unacceptable’

In an official statement Wednesday, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim says the suspect was out on bail for a previous assault charge when the stabbing happened.

“The fact that this attack was again carried out by a repeat offender, someone well-known to the police with numerous previous charges, highlights a serious issue we need to address,” said Sim. 

“[The suspect] was on probation for an assault with a weapon charge from Sept. 2023 and had breached probation conditions earlier this year.”

Sim says the man was still on probation when he allegedly carried out the attack, adding that it’s not the first time that a “repeat offender from outside Vancouver has breached their probation and carried out a violent assault.” 

He says the pattern is “unacceptable,” but claims that the gaps in public safety continue at a “non-municipal level.”

“While we continue to address the broader issues, including the mental health and addictions crisis, our immediate focus should be keeping individuals with a history of violent behaviour off our streets,” said Sim.
