Gas prices fall in Metro Vancouver: analysts

You may have noticed lower prices at the pump around Metro Vancouver recently.

According to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 427 gas outlets in Vancouver, average prices in the city have fallen four cents per litre in the past week, averaging 162.94 cents per litre Sunday.

In Abbotsford, the average was 153.06 cents per litre, down 4.4 cents from last week. In Victoria, the average was 169.91 cents per litre, down 1.9 cents from last week.

Across B.C., the average was 162.31 cents per litre, down 1.6 cents.

The good news is you can expect further price drops, GasBuddy says, but the bad news is that it may take a white.

“For now, with oil prices falling back below $70 [USD] per barrel, the national average may be a bit stuck in the current range until fall maintenance wraps up, which could help bring a sub-135c/L national average later this fall,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a release Monday.

He says that’s because of a number of problems with refineries and maintenance, but adds Hurricane Helene did not “broadly impact fuel production.”

Earlier in September, De Haan told 1130 NewsRadio that the region was about to switch over from the more expensive summer blend to the cheaper winter blend of fuel.

“By the end of the year, if things go well, prices could be 10 to 25 cents a litre lower by the time we start to get closer to Christmas and the end of the year,” he said at the time.

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on Sept. 30 in Vancouver have ranged widely over the last five years, having reached 236.31 cents per litre in 2022.
