Mounties in Surrey say a vehicle plunged into the Nicomekl River Sunday afternoon after the driver suffered a “medical event.”
The Surrey RCMP says officers were called to the area of 152 Street and 36 Avenue around 1:30 p.m. for reports of a crash.
Mounties say the driver of a black SUV was headed south when it smashed into another vehicle, and then drove into the river.
“There were two people, two occupants in the vehicle at the time that it entered the water. The passenger was able to free themselves and was on the vehicle roof when first responders attended,” Corp. Vanessa Munn explained.
“A Surrey RCMP officer, along with an off-duty firefighter and a lifeguard all swam to the vehicle and were able to work together as a team to extract the driver, who was then provided first aid and CPR.”
The driver was then taken to the hospital and was “conscious and breathing” at the time, although it’s unclear what the state of his injuries are.
Mounties didn’t say if anyone else was hurt in the incident.
