The Surrey RCMP says a man and two pets were found dead after an early morning fire Monday.

Police tell CityNews they received reports of a fire near 71A Avenue and 134A Street in the city’s Newton neighbourhood around 3:30 a.m.

The fire was in a mixed-use space, with retail downstairs and a unit upstairs.

The RCMP says despite efforts of firefighters and BC Emergency Health Services, a 54-year-old found in a suite did not survive. Two pets also died, though it’s unclear what kind of animals they were.

Investigators say they’ve determined the cause of the fire was not suspicious. No further details were not provided, with the RCMP saying the fire department is working to figure out more information.

Mounties are asking anyone with information who has not spoken with police to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 and quote file 24-10078.
